At a press conference held at Cleveland-Cliffs' facility in Cleveland, Ohio, it was revealed that imports of corrosion-resistant steel from Mexico have tripled from the historical average. This increase is being characterized as a violation of the trade agreement signed between the U.S. and Mexico in 2018. Senator Brown emphasized that this situation is unsustainable and needs to be addressed urgently.
Although there was a 16% drop in Mexican steel imports last year, Senator Brown, Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves, and USW President David McColl stated that the current import volume is still too high and is damaging the U.S. steel industry. McColl said that the dumping of foreign products into the U.S. is unacceptable and that the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) needs to be enforced strictly.
Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves criticized Mexico's trade practices, arguing that they harm American industry and workers. Goncalves stated that Mexico should be excluded from future trade agreements and that he hopes for a bilateral agreement between the U.S. and Canada only when the USMCA treaty is reviewed in 2026.
