Nucor Corporation is the largest steel producer and recycler in North America, while Helion is a fusion energy company. The two companies plan to work together to accelerate the future of clean energy in the industrial manufacturing sector at Nucor in the US.
Here, Helion's fusion power will 'revolutionise' the energy supply for Nucor's steelmaking operations, providing carbon-free electricity. According to the companies, this is the first fusion energy deal of this scale.
"This project marks a tremendous milestone in the potential use of virtually unlimited clean power for industrial manufacturing," said Leon Topalian, Nucor's CEO. "By entering into this agreement, we are demonstrating our commitment to being the world's cleanest steel producer and setting an example for all manufacturing companies.
David Kirtley, CEO of Helion, said: "We are passionate about helping the world reduce its dependence on carbon-based energy sources with abundant, clean fusion power. We are delighted to partner with Nucor, a leader in the decarbonisation of the steel industry. A project like this is only possible by working with a forward-thinking company like Nucor that is committed to reducing carbon emissions.
