World crude steel production falls in September, Türkiye ranks 8th

Turkish Steel Producers' Association (TÇÜD) published the crude steel production data for September 2023. Accordingly, while world crude steel production increased by 0.1% in the January-September period, Türkiye's crude steel production decreased by 10.1%.

In September, compared to the same month of 2022, Türkiye's finished steel production and consumption increased by 5.8% and 30.3%, respectively. Finished products production and consumption were 2.9 and 2.8 million tons, respectively.

Flat products increased by 14.4%, long products by 1.3

Flat product production increased by 14.4% to 1.1 million tons in September, while flat product consumption rose by 32% to 1.5 million tons. Long product production and consumption increased by 1.3% and 28.2%, respectively.

Decline in final product production

In the nine-month period of 2023, final product production decreased by 3.7% and consumption increased by 18.5%.

In September 2023, Türkiye's steel exports decreased by 23.3% in terms of quantity. Flat products decreased by 35.1%, long products by 28.6% and semi-products by 31.5%. The decline in the nine-month period was 39.7% in quantity terms.

In September, Türkiye's steel imports increased by 10.9% in quantity terms. Flat products and long products increased by 16.7% and 83.1%, respectively.

Increase in long products

The 53.4% increase in imports of long products in the nine-month period was mainly driven by the 115.3% rise in wire rod imports.

Exports to imports ratio declined

In the three quarters of 2022, the ratio of exports to imports, which was 93.8%, declined to 52.11% in 2023, as imports increased while exports declined rapidly.

The share of imports in total steel product consumption was 30.9%, while the share of imports in flat product consumption reached 49.6%. The share of imports under DIR in total imports was 85.3% for semi-products and 48.7% for total imports.

Scrap imports decreased

In the nine-month period of 2023, scrap imports from the EU, which had the largest share in scrap imports, decreased by 16.4%, while imports from other regions dropped by 10.3% compared to the same period of the previous year. Scrap imports from North African countries increased, while imports from other regions declined

Dumping investigation welcomed

TÇÜD Secretary General Veysel Yayan underlined that while the decline in exports continued, the increase in imports had a negative impact on our steel industry and said, "There has been an extraordinary increase in imports from Egypt, Russia, Malaysia, South Korea and China, especially in wire rod. It is of vital importance not only for our steel industry, but also for the achievement of the MTP targets to prevent state-supported, dumped imports, which cause a significant decline in the ratio of exports to imports and the capacity utilization rate, and to review the Inward Processing Regime practice and to focus on products that do not have production capacity in our country."
