The World Steel Association (WorldSteel) announced crude steel production figures for September 2024. Accordingly, world crude steel production of 71 countries amounted to 143.6 million tons (Mt) in September 2024, decreasing by 4.7% compared to the same month of the previous year.
Crude steel production by regions
In September, Africa's crude steel production increased by 2.6% year-on-year to 1.9 million tons. In Asia and Oceania, production decreased by 5% to 105.3 million tons. The EU (27) produced 10.5 million tons of steel, up 0.3%, while the rest of Europe produced 3.6 million tons, up 4.1%. Production in the Middle East fell 23% to 3.5 million tons. In North America, production fell by 3.4% to 8.6 million tons. Production in Russia and other Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries and Ukraine fell by 7.6% to 6.8 million tons. South America produced 3.5 million tons of crude steel, an increase of 3.3%.
Steel giant China's crude steel production fell 6.1% year-on-year to 77.1 million tons in September. India's crude steel output fell 0.2% to 11.7 million tons, while Japan produced 6.6 million tons, a decline of 5.8%. The US produced 6.7 million tons of steel, an increase of 1.2%, while Russia produced 5.6 million tons, a decrease of 10.3%. South Korea's output rose by 1.3% to 5.5 million tons. Germany produced 3 million tons of crude steel, an increase of 4.3%, Turkey 3.1 million tons, an increase of 6.5%, and Brazil 2.8 million tons, an increase of 9.9%. Iran's production fell by 41.2% to 1.5 million tons.
