World crude steel production decreased by 4.3% in March 2024 compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 161.2 million tons (Mt).

The World Steel Association (WorldSteel) announced the crude steel production figures for March 2024. According to the announced data, world crude steel production of 71 countries decreased by 4.3% in March 2024 compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 161.2 million tons (Mt).

Crude steel production by region

Africa produced 1.9 Mt in March 2024, up 1.1% from March 2023. Asia and Oceania produced 118.3 Mt, down 5.8%. EU (27) produced 11.6 million tons, with a decrease of 4.3%. Europe, Other produced 3.9 million tons, with an increase of 11.0%. The Middle East produced 4.8 million tons, an increase of 4.0%. North America produced 9.5 million tons, down 1.4%. Russia and other CIS + Ukraine produced 7.8 million tons with an increase of 1.5%. South America produced 3.5 million tons, down 0.2%.

The 10 countries that produce the most steel

China produced 88.3 Mt in March 2024, down 7.8% from March 2023. India produced 12.7 Mt, an increase of 7.8%. Japan produced 7.2 million tons, with a decrease of 3.9%. The United States produced 6.9 million tons, the same level as in March 2023. It is estimated that Russia produced 6.6 million tons, an increase of 0.8%. South Korea produced 5.3 million tons, with a decrease of 9.5%. Germany produced 3.5 million tons, an increase of 8.4%. Türkiye produced 3.2 million tons with an increase of 18.0%. Brazil produced 2.8 million tons, an increase of 5.6%. Iran produced 2.8 million tons with an increase of 2.0%.

In the first quarter of the year, global crude steel production increased by 0.5%, reaching 469.1 million tons.

During the said period, production in China remained at 256.6 million tons with a decrease of 1.9%, while in India it increased by 9.7% and reached 37.3 million tons.

Türkiye increased its production by 28.4%, becoming one of the countries with the highest increase. Thus, production amounted to 9.5 million tons.
