World crude steel production declined by 1.6% in January

World crude steel production decreased by 1.6% y-o-y to 148.1 million tons (Mt) in January 2024.

World crude steel production declined by 1.6% in January

The World Steel Association (WorldSteel) announced the first crude steel production figures for 2024. According to the data, world crude steel production for 71 countries totaled 148.1 million tons (Mt) in January 2024, down by 1.6% from January 2023.

Crude steel production by region

Africa produced 2.0 Mt in January 2024 indicating a 16.3% rise from January 2023. Asia and Oceania produced 107.6 Mt, down by 3.6%. EU (27) produced 10.2 million tons which reflects a 1.8% decline. Europe, Other produced 3.9 million tons, up 22.5%. Middle East produced 4.7 million tons, up by 23.1%. North America produced 9.2 million tons and decreased by 2.1%. Russia and other CIS + Ukraine produced 7.2 million tons, increasing 4.0%. South America produced 3.4 million tons with a rise of 6.3%.

Top 10 steel producing countries

China produced 77.2 million tons in January 2024, down by 6.9% y-o-y, while India produced 12.5 million tons, up by 7.3%. Japan produced 7.3 million tons, increased by 0.6%.

The United States produced 6.8 million tons, declined by 0.3%. Russia is estimated to have produced 6.2 million tons, rose by 1.2%. South Korea produced 5.7 million tons, up by 1.5%.

Turkey's crude steel production increased by 24.7%

Turkey produced 3.2 million tons and reflected a 24.7% increase. Germany is estimated to have produced 2.9 million tons, down by 0.9%. Iran produced 2.6 million tons, up by 39.3%. Brazil is estimated to have produced 2.5 million tons, down by 7.2%.
