Vale invests $2.7 billion in Amazon iron ore complex

Vale has announced a significant investment of $2.7 billion aimed at expanding the capacity of its S11D iron ore complex in northern Brazil. The company's objective is to augment its existing facilities by adding another 30 million tons of iron ore annually. By 2025, Vale anticipates reaching a production level of 260 million tons of iron ore in the northern region of Brazil.

The expansion project encompasses the construction of a fourth beneficiation plant and the installation of a second conveyor spanning approximately 9.5 kilometers, which will connect the mine to the port of Ponta da Madeira. Additionally, funds will be allocated towards the development of essential infrastructure required for transporting the increased ore volumes. This includes duplicating specific sections of the 900-kilometer railway system that serves the project.

Vale representatives emphasize the environmental advantages of working with high-grade iron ore, as it necessitates fewer resources during the processing stage and consequently results in a smaller carbon footprint. The significance of these environmental concerns is further underscored by the fact that the S11D complex is part of the larger Carajas complex, which covers 2% of the northern Amazon forest and impacts various ecosystems. To address these concerns, Vale has prioritized the reduction of diesel fuel consumption by 60% by gradually transitioning from internal combustion engine vehicles to those powered by electric motors.
