U.S. Steel, the second-largest US steel producer, has announced its indefinite closure of its Granite City steelmaking operations, leading to job losses. Around 265 workers were laid off during the temporary closure, with another 600 expected to lose their jobs in January next year.
The company plans to use its active steel production facilities to meet customer demand and balance melt capacity with its order book. Idle operations will be taken up by other plants, and rolling and finishing will continue at Granite City using slabs sourced from other plants.
