In September, the US rolled steel market saw a 20% share of imports, with steel import permit applications totaling 2,289,000 tons, a 0.7% increase from August. Finished steel import tonnage was 1,659,000 tons, 10.8% lower than August's 1,860,000 tons. For the first nine months of 2023, total imports of finished steel were 21,946,000 tons and 16,807,000 tons, down 9.4% and 14.5%, respectively.
The market share of imports in September was 20%, and has been 22% since the beginning of the year. Significant increases in steel imports in September include black plate, hot-rolled plates, ingots, billets and slabs, heavy shapes, and stainless tubes and pipes. The largest number of steel import permit applications in September came from Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, and Japan.
