Ukrainian Railways increased cargo transportation by 28% in the first half of 2024

In January-June 2024, Ukrzaliznytsia transported 22.9 million tonnes of iron ore, carrying a total of more than 90 million tonnes of freight. This is 28% more than in the same period of 2023. At the same time, export shipments grew by almost 59% to 45 million tonnes.

In the first six months of 2024, Ukraine shipped 2.59 million tonnes of iron ore to Poland, 61.7% more than in the same period last year. Ferrous metal shipments in this period amounted to 803,000 tonnes, which is 45% less than in 2023.

However, the volume of iron ore transfers through Ukrainian-Slovak railway border crossings decreased by 10.1% year-on-year to 2.85 million tonnes in 2023. Iron ore remains the leader among cargoes sent to Slovakia. Grain (498,000 tonnes) ranked second, followed by hard coal (164,000 tonnes). Transportation of ferrous metals amounted to 26 thousand tonnes.

In addition, Ukrzaliznytsia increased the transfer of iron ore through railway border crossings with Moldova to 161 thousand tonnes in the first half of 2024. Overall, 1.15 million tonnes of cargo were sent in the direction of Moldova, down 23.8% compared to the same period in 2023. The main cargoes included ore, ferrous metals (127,000 tonnes), cereals (348,000 tonnes) and cement (58,000 tonnes).

Through Ukrainian-Romanian railway border crossings in January-June 2024, 1.57 million tonnes of cargo were transferred, which is 6% less than in the first half of 2023. Grain (561,000 tonnes), oil cargo (347,000 tonnes), cement (260,000 tonnes), timber cargo (181,000 tonnes) and ferrous metals (68,000 tonnes) were transferred to Romania most of all during the six months.
