Steel production in Ukraine in May 2024 was 737.6 thousand tonnes, up 3.2% year-on-year to April 2024, with pig iron production up 9.4% to 653.1 thousand tonnes and rolled steel production up 1.8% year-on-year to 594.9 thousand tonnes.
May 2024 showed a significant year-on-year increase in production: rolled steel was up 26.5%, steel was up 26.5%, and pig iron was up 8.2% compared to May 2023.
Despite this growth, the rate of production increase is slowing down due to a number of challenges. These include the worsening situation in the country's power supply network, staff shortages due to mobilization and the incomplete reservation system, logistical difficulties, and unfavorable conditions in the global steel market.
In the period from January to May 2024, the rolled steel output of Ukrainian steel mills increased by 29.5% year-on-year to 2.57 million tonnes. Steel production increased by 31.2% to 3.14 million tonnes, and pig iron production increased by 20.8% to 2.84 million tonnes.
