UK Steel highlights that there is a growing demand for scrap materials to meet the decarbonization targets of the country's steel industry. According to a source, global demand for scrap is expected to increase by 30% by 2030 and more than 60% by 2050, while many countries have reportedly decided to limit scrap exports.
According to data, the UK produces over 10 million tons of scrap a year, but exports 80% of this production. The trade association is directing the government to encourage it to increase the supply of scrap within the country. It also highlighted the environmental impact of scrap exports, suggesting that fully recycling scrap domestically could prevent an additional 1.5 million tons of carbon emissions a year.
UK Steel's call for improved scrap management and recycling processes, in the process of the country's steel industry achieving net zero carbon targets, aims to contribute to the industry's drive towards a greener future by supporting the steel industry's decarbonization efforts and improving environmental sustainability.
