Türkish steel sector forecasts growth in 2024 despite challenges

Veysel Yayan, the General Secretary of the Türkish Steel Producers Association (TÇÜD), anticipates an increase in capacity utilization rates in the steel industry in 2024 due to various measures. Despite a 13% decline in production in 2022 and a continued decrease in the first half of the current year, there has been a gradual recovery in the second half of 2023.

Yayan attributes this recovery to factors such as new capacities coming online, reduced energy costs, and the resumption of production in the aftermath of an earthquake in southern Türkiye.

Despite a 6.1% decrease in raw steel production in the first 11 months of the year and an 18.8% increase in imports, Yayan expects significant growth in the sector in 2024. He emphasizes the importance of supporting new investments with domestic consumption to achieve a 75% capacity utilization level and anticipates positive contributions to Türkiye's current account balance by surpassing previous production and export levels.
