Turkish steel industry: 2023 export target of 15 billion dollars

Speaking at the conference, ÇİB Chairman Adnan Aslan announced that the Rebar Monitoring System (İDİS), which will record rebar production from start to finish, will be put into practice on January 1, 2024. Emphasizing that thanks to this system, rebar will be monitored with special security marks from the moment it leaves the production line, Aslan drew attention to the quality of the labeling and monitoring processes.

"We will complete this year with exports of 14-15 billion dollars"

Adnan Aslan reminded that they completed the year with exports of 21 billion dollars last year and stated that they will complete this year with exports of 14-15 billion dollars.

Aslan said, "Our exports per ton is 1,050 dollars. The price of our exports per ton will increase. We will not export construction steel and semi-finished products, we will export products with high added value. By 2027, we will supply 50 percent of our electricity consumption from renewable energy with our own resources."
Emphasizing that Türkiye is by far the number one in construction steel in the western world, Aslan said that there is no country that Türkiye does not export construction steel to.

Quota system negatively affects the Turkish steel industry

Pointing out that the biggest need of the steel industry is capital, Aslan said

"The protectionist policies in the world, which we have had a particular problem with and which started in the west in the last 5 years, are becoming more and more widespread. There are serious trade measures taken against Turkey, especially in the US and Europe. First of all, the Americans started to impose taxes on steel imports, and the American market represented 10 percent of Türkiye's total steel exports. However, in the following years, the same America granted exemptions to countries such as Japan, Europe and Brazil, but unfortunately, the same protectionist system continues to be applied to Türk,ye. The Europeans also introduced a quota system. Unfortunately, Türkiye is also negatively affected by this quota system."
