Turkey surges to the top of global scrap metal imports in 2023

New data for the first eight months of 2023 reveals a notable shift in the world's scrap metal import landscape, with Turkey emerging as the leading importer. The detailed statistics indicate that global scrap imports totaled 38 million and 180 thousand tons during this period, marking a minor 1% reduction compared to the same period in the previous year.

Turkey stands out as the most significant player in the scrap import market, with a substantial import of 14 million tons, surpassing all other nations. India closely follows, importing 6 million 830 thousand tons of scrap metal. The United States ranks third with 3 million 250 thousand tons, followed by Bangladesh at 2 million 730 thousand tons, South Korea at 2 million 590 thousand tons, and Vietnam at 2 million 500 thousand tons.

Other nations in the top 10 list include Taiwan, which imported 2 million 90 thousand tons of scrap, Pakistan with 1 million 860 thousand tons, Thailand at 860 thousand tons, and Indonesia at 70 thousand tons. Collectively, the rest of the world's countries imported a total of 1 million 450 thousand tons of scrap metal.

These figures reflect a shift in the global scrap metal import landscape, especially in Turkey. Additionally, the minor 1% reduction in overall imports compared to the previous year suggests a potential adjustment in the demand for scrap metal on a global scale. This trend is likely influenced by various economic and environmental factors, including recycling initiatives and industrial production fluctuations. The coming months will reveal whether this trend continues or evolves further.
