India's steel imports from China in the April-October period hit a four-year high. China was the top steel exporter to India during the period, shipping 1.1 million metric tons of products, up 47.3% year-on-year. South Korea was the second largest exporter, shipping 1.1 million metric tons of steel to India in the April-October period.
India maintained its position as a net exporter, exporting 3.5 million metric tons of steel to countries such as Italy, Spain, Belgium, Nepal and the UAE during the period.
China exports mainly cold rolled coils and plates, but also hot rolled coils, plates and pipes to India.
The Indian steel industry has been demanding safeguard measures against imports from China. The country imported a total of 3.5 million metric tons of steel during this period, the highest import level in the last four years.
India's crude steel production rose 15% to 82.2 million tons in the April-October period. Domestic final steel consumption rose 15% to 75.8 million tons. India maintains its position as the world's second largest crude steel producer.
