The impact of CBAM on the steel industry has been limited

According to a report from Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs...

The impact of CBAM on the steel industry has been limited

European Union (EU) carbon taxes have reached a new high of 100 €/MT. This has caused manufacturers to worry that the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) tax at the Border and the cost of exporting EU products will increase.

Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs stated that the European Union's carbon price has exceeded €100/MT due to the increase in the number of emissions in the electricity generation industry due to the increase in coal-fired electricity generation after the Russian and Ukrainian Wars.

The EU steel industry will benefit from 100% free nuclear distribution. After the official implementation of CBAM in 2026, the steel industry's rate of free nuclear distribution will decrease by only 97.5%. Therefore, 2.5% of the carbon content of export products will be charged to producers, where the producer will have a limited impact in the short run.
