The Council of Europe has announced an agreement reached between member countries and the European Parliament (EP) on the regulation that includes updating waste management rules.
Accordingly, the shipment of problematic waste outside the EU will be reduced. Waste export procedures and practices will be updated to reflect the Union's circular economy goals.
International transportation of waste will be ensured not to pose a threat to human health and the environment.
Those exporting waste from the EU to third countries will be required to notify and obtain written approval from the destination and transit countries.
Specific conditions will be required for EU countries to export plastic waste to non-OECD member countries. The ban on such exports will be implemented 2.5 years after the regulation comes into effect.
