The New York Police Department (NYPD) announced via its social media account that the accident occurred around 3:17 PM local time in the Hudson River, and that first responders were dispatched to the scene. While no statement has been made about the cause of the crash, US media suggested that the accident might have occurred during a sightseeing helicopter tour.
Siemens confirmed the passing of CEO Agustin Escobar and his family in the tragic helicopter crash. A statement from the company read, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Agustin Escobar and his family. Our condolences go out to their families."
In the accident, Escobar, along with his wife Merce Camprubí Montal and their three children, passed away. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that four people died at the crash site, while two others passed away in the hospital. Mayor Eric Adams announced that an investigation had been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
Escobar was serving as the global CEO of Siemens' Railway Infrastructure division. Following the accident, messages of condolence poured in for Siemens and the family, with the Mayor of New York also expressing his condolences for those who lost their lives in the crash.
