Australian mining company Terramin has been granted permission by the Algerian government to develop the Tala Hamza zinc deposit in Algiers. The company plans to invest A$449 million ($300 million) in the project, which will be located near the port city of Bejaia on the Mediterranean coast.
The permit allows Terramin to mine up to 2 million tons of zinc-bearing ore per year, with an initial production target of 1.3 million tons per year. The mine is expected to operate for about 21 years and has sufficient resources to produce 129,300 tons of zinc in concentrate and 26,000 tons of lead in concentrate per year, according to a 2018 geological survey.
