Tata Steel and SMS group collaboration achieved a historical record

Tata Steel, one of India's steel giants, announced a historical achievement at its H Blast Furnace in Jamshedpur. The blast furnace surpassed 50 million tons of hot metal production by January 8, 2025, becoming the first furnace in India to cross this threshold without medium-term maintenance.

Tata Steel and SMS group collaboration achieved a historical record

Tata Steel had signed an agreement with SMS group and Larsen & Toubro consortium for the construction of Blast Furnace H at its Jamshedpur plant in 2005. With an internal volume of 3814 m³ and an annual hot metal production capacity of 2.5 million tons, the furnace is the largest blast furnace built in India. It was emphasized that the H Blast Furnace, commissioned in 2008, set new standards of operational excellence in the sector by exceeding its annual capacity by 20%. The furnace, which attracts attention with its long-lasting performance, also sets an example for sustainable production in the Indian steel industry.

Performance of the H Blast Furnace has been highly appreciated nationally and internationally, achieving the highest feather coal injection rate in India for nine consecutive years. It was awarded by the President of India for its energy-saving innovations.

Tata Steel and SMS group continue to lead the way in sustainable steelmaking, and the advanced energy-saving technologies and efficient resource management employed at Blast Furnace H are seen as an important step in reducing the environmental impact of steelmaking.

Cristiano Castagnola, Head of CoC Blast Furnaces, SMS group, stated: “We are delighted to see the H Blast Furnace reach such an important milestone. Our collaboration with Tata Steel has been a perfect synergy of technological innovation and operational excellence. This project illustrates our shared commitment to sustainable steel production, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the industry.”
