Tariffs statement from China: “No progress, we are open for dialogue”

Beijing has denied US President Donald Trump's claims about tariff negotiations with China.

Tariffs statement from China: “No progress, we are open for dialogue”

"The claim that there has been any progress in the China-US trade negotiations lacks factual basis and is an attempt to catch the wind," stated," stated Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Hı Yadong.

Spokesperson Hı noted that China has always been open to dialogue and consultation, emphasizing that this process can only be carried out on the basis of mutual respect and equality. “If the US really wants to solve the problem, it should listen to the voice of reason of the international community and its own public opinion, cancel all unilateral tariff measures against China, and seek ways to resolve differences through equal dialogue,” he added.

“China and the United States are not holding any consultations or negotiations on tariffs, and no agreement has been reached on this issue,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Ciakun stated at a press conference in Beijing. Guo noted that China's position is clear and added, "If we have to fight, we will fight. If the US wants dialogue, our door is open to it,".

Guo underlined that the negotiation and dialogue process can only be possible on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and respect.

Tariff showdown continues

China responded harshly to the “reciprocal tariffs” announced by Trump on April 2 and responded at the same rate. In the showdown between the two countries, the US raised its tariffs on China to 145%, while Beijing raised its tariffs on China to 125%. While the Washington administration postponed the reciprocal tariffs imposed on other countries for 90 days, it had put the practices against China into effect.

Trump, in his statement at the signing ceremony organized in the Oval Office yesterday, stated that they negotiate with China every day on tariffs and added, "We will make a fair deal with China. It will be fair. Everything is active right now. Everyone wants to be part of what we're doing,", suggesting that negotiations were ongoing.

However, Beijing's statements made it clear that this process is not as active as Washington claims.
