Sweden's HYBRIT, a fossil-free steel joint venture between Swedish speciality steel producer SSAB, Swedish iron ore producer LKAB and Swedish energy company Vattenfall, announced that it has received SEK 3.1 billion in funding from the Swedish energy company.
HYBRIT will be the first fossil fuel-free demonstration plant in Gällivare. The company LKAB will plan and build the plant.
The plant is planned to produce 1.3 million tonnes of fossil-free sponge iron per year on an industrial scale. When the demonstration plant utilises HYBRIT technology in full operation, the annual electricity demand is expected to be around five terawatt hours.
