According to data released by the Spanish Steel Producers Association (UNESID), steel production in Spain reached 1.10 million tonnes in May 2024, up 2.8% monthly and 9.1% year-on-year. Sources noted that this increase is an indication of the strong performance of the Spanish steel industry despite the uncertainties in global markets.
This production increase in May is attributed to the increase in demand, especially in European steel markets, and the revival in sectors such as construction and automotive. This success in Spain's steel production contributes positively to the country's economic recovery process. Especially the increase in investments in the construction sector and the acceleration of green energy projects are reflected in the production figures by increasing the demand for steel.
In the same period, the Spanish steel industry converted 884,000 tonnes of scrap into new steel products. This figure represents a decrease of 2.5 % compared to the previous month, but a yearly increase of 0.8 %. The recycling of scrap steel plays an important role in the sector in terms of sustainability and resource efficiency.
The Spanish steel industry is taking important steps towards sustainability and environmentally friendly production techniques. The recycling of scrap steel is of great importance in terms of reducing environmental impacts and efficient use of resources. In this context, the efforts of steel producers to increase energy efficiency by investing in innovative technologies are noteworthy.
