Salthammer Båtbyggeri shipyard in Norway to build two electric Coastern 28eH supply vessels for AQS Rederi. The vessels, approximately 30 metres long, are intended to be used for fish farming and feature a new design developed by Tomra Engineering.

SSAB plans to use zero-emission steel in the electrically powered ships being built at Norway's Salthammer shipyard. Ships are due to be completed in 2025 and 2026 and powered by uninterrupted electricity through large electric batteries. AQS Managing Director Pål Anders Lauvsnes emphasized that this step is a significant advance in the company's goal of building a fully electric and environmentally friendly fleet by 2033.

Robert Moen, head of HSE, Quality and Sustainability at Salthammer Båtbyggeri stated: “It is absolutely fantastic that the focus is on environmentally friendly zero-emission steel and that it is completely in line with our goals in innovation and sustainability. With this, we hope that we can show that there are good and greener solutions in our industry,”

Analysts report that the transition of the maritime sector to a low-emission steel can decrease approximately 800 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, whereas in the steel sector, CO2 emissions need to be decreased by 25% by 2030.
