This investment will eliminate the need to invest in existing systems using blast furnaces and coke plants and will mean more capacity, a better cost position and fossil-free production for premium products, SSAB said.
The steelmaker calls this decision "a historic milestone in the green transformation towards fossil-free steel production". The company also adds: "Oxelösund is the first major step in SSAB's plan to transform the entire Nordic production system by around 2030." The Swedish group aims to start producing carbon emission-free steel based on recycled steel and sponge iron in the fourth quarter of 2026.
