SSAB and Fassi reach agreement for fossil-free steel

Swedish steelmaker SSAB and Italian crane manufacturer Fassi have signed an agreement covering future deliveries of steel produced with virtually zero fossil carbon emissions.

SSAB and Fassi reach agreement for fossil-free steel

Under the agreement, steel produced from both iron ore and recycled scrap will be supplied for use in Fassi's hydraulic and truck-mounted cranes.

SSAB and Fassi Expand Cooperation

Fassi, one of the world's largest manufacturers of loader cranes, has pioneered the use of advanced structural steels in cranes. With SSAB's high-strength Strenx® steel, Fassi offers increased lifting power, reduced weight and extended reach in its cranes. With the new agreement, SSAB and Fassi are expanding their partnership to include deliveries of SSAB Fossil-free™ steel and SSAB Zero™ steel.

With this step, Fassi aims to bring to market a new generation of cranes with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. Per Elfgren, Head of Special Steels at SSAB, said of the collaboration:

“We look forward to deepening our cooperation with Fassi by offering premium high-strength steel produced with a significantly lower carbon footprint. SSAB is proud to partner with leading companies that share our passion for innovation, sustainability and advanced products.”

Giovanni Fassi, CEO of Fassi, emphasized that sustainability is indispensable for the future and said:

“Innovation is a projection for the future. There is no future without sustainability. That is why we have chosen to enter into this partnership with SSAB with enthusiasm and determination to develop the cranes of tomorrow.”

SSAB Reduces Carbon Emissions in Steel Production

Conventional steel production accounts for around 7% of global CO₂ emissions, with both primary steel production and recycled steel processes contributing to emissions. To reduce climate impact, SSAB is investing in the production of SSAB Zero™ steel, produced using fossil-free electricity and biogas, and fossil-free steel produced using hydrogen instead of coal with HYBRIT® technology.

In 2021, SSAB introduced the world's first fossil-free steel produced with HYBRIT® technology and made pilot deliveries. The company aims to largely eliminate heavy carbon emissions with this new generation of steel production.

Fassi Continues to Lead in Innovation

With a focus on continuous development and sustainability, Fassi has established a research unit called “Innovation Center”. This center is responsible for developing, testing and implementing new technologies in the field of lifting solutions.

The new cooperation between Fassi and SSAB is seen as an important step in the transition to a sustainable production model in both the steel industry and heavy industry.
