According to Rosstat data, in the first half of 2024, Russian companies reduced coal production by 0.7% to 211 million tonnes. Production output of different types of coal changed differently. Thus, coking coal production increased by 9.2% to 56.2 million tonnes, while lignite production increased by 2.2% to 46.3 million tonnes.
Hard coal production fell by 1.5% to 165 million tonnes, while anthracite production fell by 21.3% to 11 million tonnes. Other hard coal was extracted 97.9 million tonnes, down 4.3% year-on-year.
The Ministry of Energy confirmed in June 2024 that the 2024 production target of 440 million tonnes remains on track. Despite this, the coal export forecast, originally at 220 million tonnes, is likely to be revised downwards.
