Rusal wants to increase low carbon aluminum supply in China

According to 2021 data from the International Aluminum Institute, primary aluminum emits an average of 16.6 tons of carbon dioxide per tonne of metal, making it one of the most carbon-intensive segments for the metals industry and automakers using significant amounts of aluminum.

To reduce carbon emissions, increasing volumes of low-carbon aluminum are produced using hydropower or recycled material.

"We are very optimistic about China's low carbon demand," said Huang Wenqian, vice president of Rusal Shanghai Economic and Trade Company Limited.

Rusal reported that almost all of the 4 million tons of electrolytic aluminum produced each year is low-carbon, with no more than 4 tons of carbon emissions.

It was stated that the company sells 400,000 to 500,000 tons of aluminum to China every year, which accounts for the bulk of China's 1.58 million tons of imports.
