Rio Tinto unleashes scrap shipment for transformative demolition project in Australia

Rio Tinto has initiated a colossal demolition project at the Gove alumina refinery in Australia, set to culminate in the largest scrap shipment to date. The inaugural shipment, comprising approximately 15,000 tons of scrap, is destined for export to Asia, where it will be transformed into new steel wire, rods, and beams.

Led by Liberty Industrial, the project is anticipated to be completed by the year 2027. A total of 142,000 tons of steel and 300,000 tons of concrete resulting from the demolition will be recycled for local road construction and other developmental projects. The entire endeavor is poised to contribute significantly to sustainable practices and is projected to reach its completion milestone by 2027.
