Rio Tinto and BHP plan to work with selected parties to develop solutions that can improve water recovery and reduce potential safety risks and environmental impacts associated with tailings facilities. The companies have received interest from startups, research groups, technology companies, equipment manufacturers and reagent suppliers.
Solutions ready for the mining market will be evaluated
Early-stage research and development ideas with solutions already in use in other sectors or ready for the mining market will be considered.
Rio Tinto's chief research and development advisor Saskia Duyvestain said:
"We want to capitalize on the many great ideas and innovations we know exist and work together to find ways to improve the safety and reduce the environmental impact of tailings facilities."
