Rio Tinto has announced a $165 million investment to renovate its Grande-Baie aluminum smelter in Quebec, Canada. This funding will go towards refurbishing two anode baking furnaces that are at the end of their operational life and conducting studies for future updates to other equipment.
The renovation work, set to occur in 2025 and 2026, aims to maintain a steady supply of anodes to the Grande-Baie and Laterrière plants for the foreseeable future. Rio Tinto also plans to offset the carbon emissions from this project by planting trees around the smelter.
Martin Lavoie, the operations director for Grande-Baie and Laterrière, emphasized that this project will sustain and enhance the region's aluminum production while also bringing substantial economic benefits. About 185 jobs will be created at the height of the project.
