Renewable energy attack from the Turkish iron and steel industry

The iron and steel industry, one of the locomotives of Turkey's exports, undertook 15.6% of Turkey's total exports with an export of 35.4 billion dollars in 2022.

Renewable energy attack from the Turkish iron and steel industry

Stating that the iron-steel industries have experienced a recession period as a result of the crises experienced, Fuat Tosyalı, Chairman of the Board of the Mediterranean Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters' Association (ADMIB), said, “We are a sector that uses energy intensively in production. Rising energy costs have negatively affected our competitiveness. That's why we insistently emphasize the importance of green transformation and the use of renewable energy.”

Turkey's exports in 2022 increased by 12.9% compared to 2021 and reached 254.2 billion dollars. While the Turkish ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector achieved an export income of 14 billion 385 million dollars in 2022 with an increase of 16.4% compared to the previous year, the steel industry, despite a decrease of 5.3%, exceeded the limit of 20 billion dollars and signed an export of 21 billion 62 million dollars.

Fuat Tosyalı, Chairman of ADMİB Board of Directors, stated that protectionist measures and increases in energy costs will occupy the agenda again in 2023, and said, “As the share of energy, which is consumed heavily in the steel industry, in production costs increases, our competitiveness is adversely affected. That's why we insist on the importance of green transformation and the use of renewable energy. We think that we have disadvantages when compared to countries and regions where renewable energy use is intense, such as the European Union. We definitely need to increase the weight of renewable energy use in industry. As the Association, we are working on this issue with our member companies.”
