ReMA: New US steel and aluminum tariffs will not affect scrap trade

The US steel and aluminum tariffs do not include scrap imports and scrap trade can continue as before, according to a review by the Recycled Materials Association ReMA.

ReMA: New US steel and aluminum tariffs will not affect scrap trade

ReMA said that scrap products are not included in the tariffs as a result of their review and analysis of US President Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs. ReMA Assistant Vice President Adam Shaffer, who made a statement as a result of their review, announced that no additional duty will be applied to scrap coming to the US, and that scrap is excluded from the tariffs.

Emphasizing that the tariffs in 2017 and 2018 did not cover scrap, Shaffer said that the new tariffs will continue same as before. Shaffer also touched on the issue of Trump's reciprocal tariffs, adding that they are also working on how reciprocal tariffs will affect recycled materials traders and how best to limit these effects.

The details of the reciprocal tariffs have not yet been announced, but the exclusion of scrap, the raw material for steel production, from the tariffs suggests that at least the global scrap trade may not be as affected by the new US tariffs as finished products.
