Qarmet recorded significant growth in pig iron and steel production. From December 2023 to June 2024, pig iron production increased by more than 37%, with monthly growth rates ranging from 0.6% to 10.7%. Steel production increased by more than 40% over the period, with monthly growth rates ranging from 1.2% to 20.7%. More than 1.66 million tonnes of steel and 1.5 million tonnes of pig iron were produced in the six months. The average monthly shipment rate was 6.4%, while the overall growth in average daily shipments exceeded 33%.
"With the current state of the plant, these are not bad results, given the dynamics of further growth," said Andrey Berg, Head of the Steel Division. Now what needs to be done is to bring the equipment into a favourable condition by carrying out current and major repairs. The main efforts are also directed at preparing the plant for winter operating conditions in 2024-2025. We are building up the necessary reserves of iron ore, flux raw materials and all types of fuel for winter operations."
A high-level converter was installed at Qarmet in May. Three converters are used for steel production, each in need of modernisation. Starting with the modernisation of the second unit, the converter was successfully put into operation. The new casing for this unit was manufactured by Danieli and installed at the plant for the first time as a foreign design.
