The refurbishment, completed in just six weeks during the 2023 summer shutdown, demonstrates exceptional speed compared to similar projects, achieving completion within 12 months of signing.
This success was achieved through design features tailored to Feralpi's specific requirements and close collaboration between Primetals Technologies and Feralpi engineers. Primetals Technologies designed the casting machine as a single piece encompassing all six strands and pre-assembled the equipment before transport to Feralpi's facility. Molds and retractable oscillators were also manufactured as a single unit for seamless implementation.
Productivity-Boosting Technology: Retractable Oscillators
The addition of retractable oscillators, a key part of the project, significantly increased productivity. Unlike traditional designs where mold changes halt production across all strands, this new configuration allows for individual mold changes. Operators can thus maintain operation on other strands while making adjustments on one.
Improved Centerline Quality and Mold Level Stability
The refurbishment included the supply of mechanical equipment and a comprehensive electrical and automation solution from Primetals Technologies. This encompassed retractable oscillators, wire guiding units, and the LevCon Autostart function. Primetals experts collaborated with Feralpi engineers to optimize response times for the withdrawal drives and updated LevCon parameters, resulting in a 34% average improvement in mold level stability.
Feralpi's Circular Economy Approach
The Feralpi Group, with an annual production capacity of 2.45 million tons, is a leading steel supplier to the European construction industry. The group's commitment to sustainability and the circular economy is highlighted by its use of recycled materials in 98.6% of its steel production. Founded in 1968, Feralpi Siderurgica operates across Europe and North Africa as a major supplier of reinforcing steel, wire rod, and reinforcing meshes.
