Among the members of the Aegean Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters' Association, Kocaer Çelik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. ranked at the top of exports, while the second company was Başak Metal Ticaret ve Sanayi A.Ş. and the third company was Kardemir Dış Ticaret Anonim Şirketi.
Yalçın Ertan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aegean Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters' Association, stated that they increased their exports by 15 percent in 2022 compared to 2021 and reached 2 billion 564 million dollars. Ertan said, "Our 35 members, to whom we gave awards, brought $2 billion in foreign currency to Türkiye in 2022. We thank them," he said.
In 2023, we maintained our presence
Sharing the information that they exported 2.3 billion dollars in the January-November period of 2023, Ertan said, "We anticipate that we will complete 2023 at the same levels as 2022. Despite many global and regional challenges, thanks to our experience in the sector and our competitive power in product groups specific to our region, we, as the Aegean Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters Association, are positively differentiated in the export performance of 2023, despite the loss of 12 billion dollars in exports in the Turkish steel and non-ferrous metals sectors in the last two years compared to the end of 2021."
We want financing for value-added product investment and reduction in energy prices for competitiveness
Referring to the global negativities experienced in 2023, President Ertan continued his speech as follows; "We have been experiencing difficulties in our largest export markets, the EU and the US market, due to the Russian-Ukrainian and Israeli-Palestinian wars, global high inflation, interest rates, decline in global demand for iron and steel, slowdown in the construction sector and protectionist measures. In addition, our exporters are losing their competitive advantage as energy costs in the domestic market are much higher than in our competitors in the EU, Middle East and Far East, and human resource costs have increased. Since 70 percent of our production is based on imported raw materials, our need for foreign currency is constant. From this point of view, it is clear that as a sector, we need credit and financing resources more than ever in order to make investments that will increase our competitiveness in the global market and emphasize value-added products. In addition, as an energy-intensive sector, we demand that our energy costs be regulated in a way to protect our competitiveness."
We are preparing for a green consensus
Speaking about the work they are doing to prepare for the European Green Deal put forward by the European Union to prevent climate change, Ertan continued his words as follows; " Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, whose transition period started on October 1, 2023, is expected to bring additional obligations and costs to the companies in our sector. As the Association, we closely follow the developments and carry out studies in order for our sector to adapt to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism– CBAM and decarbonization in the fastest way possible. We continue to contribute to increasing the sustainability capacities of our companies with our Development of International Competitiveness Development Project titled "Development of Sustainable Competitiveness in the Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Sector", which is one of these studies and which we have been continuing since 2021."
