The POSCO Research Institute, a think tank affiliated with South Korea's largest steelmaker POSCO Group, announced on Sunday that it has signed an agreement with Withrobot and Aidin Robotics on joint R&D of robots used for safety management in workplaces such as steel mills.
Under the agreement, POSCO will jointly develop intelligent wire robots with Withrobot. Using video, audio, thermal infrared and Lidar sensors, the devices will be able to monitor hazards at production sites as they move along a wire path in the ceiling.
POSCO is also developing quadrupedal walking robots with Aidin to inspect steelmaking plants by accessing places that are inaccessible to humans. Some steel production facilities are difficult to access for inspection by personnel due to hazardous factors such as high temperatures.
"We will continue to lead digital transformation at the group level to improve the safety and productivity of the working environment, while facilitating the development of intelligent mobile robotic solutions based on data," POSCO said.
