The stainless steel sector, recently in the spotlight due to additional taxes and anti-dumping debates, has seen the establishment of a new association called the Stainless Steel Industry Association (PASSAD) by raw material producer Posco Assan TST.
According to a statement on PASSAD’s social media account, the association was founded with the objective of strengthening the stainless steel sector, promoting its use, resolving issues faced by manufacturers, users, and consumers, fostering sector development, and providing effective representation. PASSAD will conduct written, visual, and social media campaigns to ensure accurate public perception of the benefits and importance of stainless steel as a material. In addition to training and promotional activities, the association will strive to raise awareness of the benefits of stainless steel.
Collaboration with public institutions
The association will engage with government institutions and agencies to support the development and growth of the stainless steel sector. PASSAD will contribute to the strong development of the industry by preparing technical reports and regulatory proposals, aiming to align import and export practices with EU legislation and internationally accepted norms.
PASSAD will collaborate with members, ministries, institutions, organizations, and civil society organizations to improve existing standards and develop new ones. The association also aims to conduct national and international efforts to promote the stainless steel sector's integration and development within the circular economy.
Anti-dumping tensions persist
At the beginning of the year, the additional tax on stainless steel imports was increased from 8% to 12%, provoking a reaction from companies manufacturing products from stainless steel. While discussions on the additional tax continued, the initiation of an anti-dumping investigation by the Ministry of Trade, at the request of Posco Assan TST, for stainless steel imported from China and Indonesia further escalated tensions.
These developments and the establishment of PASSAD are seen as significant steps towards shaping the future of the stainless steel sector.
