Port of Liverpool expands steel port on demand

Peel Ports Group has announced that it will expand its steel and metals port in response to strong growth in customer demand at the Port of Liverpool.

Port of Liverpool expands steel port on demand

The UK's second largest port operator has started construction of a 20,000 square metre extended warehouse at North 3 Canada Quay in 2023. The investment comes at a time when the Port of Liverpool experienced one of its busiest months for steel volumes in September, with more than 75,000 tonnes of steel processed at the port and Birkenhead Quay.

This was the port's busiest month for steel for more than two years, with 93,000 tonnes processed in July 2021.

The first 8,000 square metres of the newly created warehouse space is already in use. The second phase of construction work to build an additional 12,000 square feet of the terminal is underway and is scheduled for completion in December.

Phil Hall, Director of Peel Ports Group Mersey Ports, said: "We are really pleased to see such an increase in demand for steel processing at our port in recent months. This positive news has led us to choose to increase the size of our facility, offering our customers the chance to increase their capacity and enhance our processing capabilities at the port."
