Port Hedland Green Steel, an Australian company, has proposed developing a large-scale downstream iron ore processing plant (IOPF) in the Pilbara region. The project, known as the Port Hedland Green Steel Project - Phase 1, will be located in the Boodarie Strategic Industrial Area (BSIA) and will consist of a pellet plant and a hot briquette iron (HBI) plant.
The majority of the pellets will be fed to the HBI facility and 2 million tons/year of HBI will be produced.The project will consume approximately 3-3.5 million tons/year of iron ore. The remaining pellets will be exported from Port Hedland Port. The proposal also includes hydrogen production and storage facilities and a nitrogen plant. The project also includes a 466-hectare Infrastructure Development Envelope allowing for connectivity, access roads and drainage to third-party suppliers.
