NLMK is building a new electric arc furnace (EAF) at its Verona plant, set to be operational by 2027.The new equipment, crucial due to the EU's carbon reduction policies, is expected to produce 400,000 to 500,000 tons of green steel semi-finished products annually.
NLMK Verona currently has an annual production capacity of 450,000 tons of various steel products, including forged and rolled sheet, forged blocks, and ingots. The Verona plant is part of NLMK Europe's sheet division, along with facilities in Clabecq, Belgium, and DanSteel, Denmark.
NLMK Verona currently sources about 70% of its sheet needs from its parent company in Russia. However, the plant also has an existing furnace capable of producing 50,000 tons of sheet annually. This new project aims to reduce reliance on Russian imports, boosting local production and optimizing imports from Asia and Europe. This will diversify the supply chain and mitigate potential geopolitical risks, strengthening NLMK Verona's stability.
NLMK Verona's plan to build a new 400,000-500,000 ton/year electric arc furnace (EAF) by 2027 is designed to meet EU green steel targets, reduce dependence on Russian raw materials, and significantly increase production capacity. The EUR 600 million investment reinforces the company's European position and demonstrates its commitment to sustainable and competitive steel production.
