Japan's largest steelmaker Nippon Steel announced on Friday that it plans to sell its entire 50% stake in the AM/NS Calvert steel plant, a joint venture it operates with ArcelorMittal. This sale is contingent on the success of Nippon Steel's bid to acquire United States Steel.
If the acquisition goes through, Nippon Steel will sell its stake in NS Kote Holding, which controls the joint venture stake, to ArcelorMittal for USD 1. This would result in the company recording a consolidated loss of approximately 230 billion yen (USD 1.55 billion).
However, if the deal to acquire U.S. Steel does not materialize, the sale of NS Kote to ArcelorMittal will be canceled, and Nippon Steel's earnings performance will remain unaffected, according to a statement from the company.
