Nigeria and South Africa have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost collaboration in the mining sector. During a bilateral meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, and South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, formalized the agreement. Developed under the framework of the Nigeria–South Africa Bi-National Commission, the MoU outlines cooperation in geological mapping, mineral exploration, knowledge transfer, and capacity building.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Alake emphasized that this partnership would significantly contribute to investment promotion, regional integration, and value addition. He highlighted that Nigeria’s vast mineral resources combined with South Africa’s advanced mining expertise would drive industrialization, job creation, and sustainable growth across the continent. Key areas of focus include geological research using UAVs, the application of remote sensing technologies, and advanced mineral processing training.
Minister Gwede Mantashe welcomed Nigeria’s renewed interest in mining, affirming South Africa’s commitment to deepening the partnership. Both ministers pledged sustained collaboration to implement the MoU’s action points and strengthen intra-African trade. The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the ministries of solid minerals and steel development of both countries.
