Minister of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change Mehmet Özhaseki made statements on the construction of permanent residences in the earthquake zone.
In his written statement, Özhaseki emphasised that after the earthquakes centred in Kahramanmaraş on 6th February, the construction of temporary shelters and workplaces continued in 11 cities affected by the disaster on the one hand, and the construction of permanent residences continued rapidly on the other hand.
Pointing out that 14 million people were affected by the earthquake, Özhaseki said:
"We have about 100 districts, nearly 1000 villages and the number of destroyed buildings, I received the figures again yesterday, because there are objections, there are decisions made by the courts, it can change from time to time, 680 thousand houses were destroyed. 170 thousand workplaces, warehouses, stables, barns, single-storey village houses were demolished. In other words, there are 850 thousand houses and workplaces that we have to build. We will also build their infrastructure. The material damage of all of these is around 100 billion dollars. Some of the people are in tents, some are in container cities. They want to get out of there as soon as possible. They say, 'hurry up and build our houses, give them to us.' These will be done, there is no solution."
Özhaseki stated that they will overcome this burden and gave the following information:
"Our disaster houses are being built rapidly in 11 provinces affected by the earthquake. Hopefully, as we promised, we will finish more than 300 thousand houses within a year, and then all other houses within 1.5 and 2 years, and we will bring everyone to their homes. There are new formulas we are working on for the earthquake region, which I will present to Mr President at our cabinet meeting. When these formulas come into effect, we will finish the houses of our earthquake victims in a much shorter time. We will reunite our citizens with their safe and sound houses without making any of them victimised."
