Malaysia's leading steelmaker Mycron Steel Bhd plans to develop and introduce its own patented green steel products by 2025 to meet the increasing demand for sustainable materials. CEO Roshan M Abdullah stated that the new green steel brand will focus on high-quality, low-carbon products for industries like automotive, construction, and consumer goods.
The company has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan's second-largest steelmaker JFE Steel Corp to integrate JGreeX green steel into its production. JGreeX uses a mass-balance approach to reduce carbon emissions throughout the steel production chain, with a key focus on hot-rolled steel sheets.
Roshan noted that green steel could make up to 25% of global steel sales by 2030, and Mycron Steel aims to align with Malaysia's sustainability goals under initiatives like the 12th Malaysia Plan and NIMP 2030.
