Molten Industries leads new initiative for carbon-neutral steel production

Molten Industries spearheads carbon-neutral steel production with a USD 5.4 million U.S. Department of Energy grant.

Molten Industries leads new initiative for carbon-neutral steel production

Molten Industries is taking the lead in a collaborative project with U.S. Steel, a prominent steel producer in US, and CPFD Software, focusing on creating a carbon-neutral process for steel production. This initiative is powered by a USD 5.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The project's goal is to engineer and evaluate a pilot system designed to eradicate carbon emissions during the iron reduction stage. Molten Industries specializes in methane pyrolysis technology, which is used to produce hydrogen as a clean reducing agent in steel-making, significantly reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption.

The core technology involves methane pyrolysis, which Molten Industries is deploying to produce hydrogen. This hydrogen is used as a reducing agent in the steel-making process, providing a significant reduction in energy consumption and carbon intensity. This method contrasts sharply with conventional practices, offering a more environmentally friendly alternative.

The partnership capitalizes on U.S. Steel's resources, including their iron ore, to demonstrate the feasibility of producing cleaner steel. This could potentially be integrated into U.S. Steel's operations, especially in their electric arc furnaces. Additionally, CPFD Software is contributing its advanced simulation capabilities to enhance the development and scaling of this technology. CPFD Software, known for its advanced simulation tools, enhances the development and scaling of this technology with their expertise in multiphase simulation.
