Metal Industrialists' Employers' Union and trade unions agree on interim raise for metal workers
A joint written statement was made by Pevrul Kavlak, President of the Turkish Metal Union, Adnan Serdaroglu, President of the United Metal-Labor Union, and Yunus Degirmenci, President of the Ozcelik trade Union.
In the statement, it was stated that the workers struggled with the cost of living and livelihood problems caused by adverse economic conditions and high inflation, and that the increase in the minimum wage brought the wages closer in the organized workplaces and the wage balance was disturbed.
This situation necessitated a new regulation based on seniority increase in the Group Collective Bargaining Agreement signed with the Metal Industrialists' Employers' Union on 12th January, 2022 and valid from 1st September , 2021 to 31st August, 2023, the statement said.
"The last of the negotiations that have been going on for a while for this purpose was held at MESS Headquarters. Accordingly; The hourly wages of the workers on 31st December, 2022 will first be reduced to 48.04 liras. Then, under the current collective bargaining agreement, the fourth tranche wage increase, which must be given in March 2023, will be applied as 15% after the above-mentioned arrangement, without waiting for March. However, if the inflation rate of the last six months in March exceeds 15%, the excess will be fully reflected in the wages on 28th February. After this arrangement, 70 cents will be added to the hourly wages for each seniority year, not to exceed 10.5 liras. Thus, the total rate of increase obtained with the agreement was 34%."
Stating that the agreement concerns nearly 180 thousand unionized employees in the metal sector, the statement said, "We believe that this improvement made by our unions will reduce the real wage losses experienced by our members working in the workplaces affiliated to MESS to some extent and we will compensate for our losses in the MESS Group Collective Labor Agreement for the period of 2023-2025."
