Mauritania plans to move to low-carbon production by increasing iron ore production. It also aims to become a leader in sustainable energy production by investing in green energy projects.

Mauritania is making great strides in green energy and iron ore production

According to the statement made by the African Development Bank (AFDB), Mauritania aims to transition to low-carbon production by increasing its iron ore production to over 45 million metric tons per year in the next 10 years. In this context, the country will invest in infrastructure and logistics and focus on the production of quality iron ore and pellets.

Mauritania plans to transition to green steel production based on green energy in the medium and long term. In this direction, the country continues its efforts to become a clean energy center in the green hydrogen market. The $40 billion Aman project, which aims to produce 1.7 million metric tons of green hydrogen and 10 million metric tons of green ammonia per year, is being implemented with the financial and technical support of the AFDB.

The Nour green hydrogen project is of great importance as part of Mauritania's sustainability and clean energy strategies. This project has the potential to become one of the leading projects in the global green hydrogen market by utilizing the country's solar and wind energy potential. The Nour project is considered an important step towards becoming a major international energy production center by 2030.

Alongside these developments, Mauritania's state-owned SNIM and Luxembourg-based steel giant ArcelorMittal are planning to jointly explore green steel production, which is expected to be a leader in sustainable steel production.
