Marcegaglia invests for digitalisation

Italian steel producer Marcegaglia is investing in the digitalisation of its plants in Italy.

Marcegaglia invests for digitalisation

A company spokesperson said it has implemented the "MasterModel" innovation project to digitise the entire re-rolling of hot-rolled coil, from pickling to galvanising.

MasterModel is a high-level mathematical software system that can integrate the chemical and mechanical properties of HRC and metallurgical details such as microstructure with the target quality of the final product.

French equipment manufacturer Fives has commissioned the so-called "SmartLine" line at Margegalia's plant in Ravenna. This is a digital strip processing line based on predictive models and process knowledge that optimises the operations of sections of the strip processing line in automatic mode. SmartLine processes incoming roll data, predicts setpoints for targeted properties and sets the process parameters for each individual roll. It ensures that each roll is produced as the first choice from start to finish.

Aldo Fiorini, director of Marcegaglia Ravenna and business manager for Carbon Steel Flats, says that thanks to SmartLine, Margegalia has reduced operating costs, especially gas consumption, by 10%, productivity has increased by 5% and the company has achieved a very high level of process stability. He adds that SmartLine is the result of a joint development and is a tool for better, faster and higher quality production.
